Summon Alice

Master the essential keyboard shortcut that will transform how you use Alice and dramatically boost your productivity. Learn why this simple habit is the key to making AI assistance part of your daily workflow.

There's a few keys on my keyboard that are really worn out.

It's the shortcut to summon Alice. On macOS it's ⌘⇧D, on Windows — Ctrl+Shift+D.

Why This Shortcut Matters

Why is this shortcut so important it deserves its own article?

Because every tool has an activation moment — that "aha!" moment when users really get the value. A few examples:

  • Instagram: Uploading your first photo that gets a like

  • Spotify: Creating your first playlist

  • Airbnb: Booking a place cheaper than a hotel

These small wins make people come back.

Alice's Activation Moment

We discovered that Alice's activation moment is when you summon her using the shortcut. Remembering it — and using it instinctively when you need help — is the key to boosting productivity.

What matters most is that when you're about to do something Alice can help with, you remember she's ready and just a shortcut away.

Customizing Your Shortcut

Of course, you can change the shortcut at any time via Settings → General. If it's not working, it might be used by another app — just assign a different one.

Pro Tip: Screenshots for Context

One more tip from my own workflow: often you'll want to give Alice some context, like a message you're replying to. Instead of copying the text — take a screenshot.

On macOS, my favorite shortcut is for partial screenshots to clipboard. You can set it in System Settings → Keyboard Shortcuts → Screenshots (mine is ⌘⇧W).

After hitting the shortcut, select the screen area, call up Alice (⌘⇧D), paste (⌘V) — and boom. Alice has the context. Now just write your reply and send it.

Start Building the Habit

From now on, try using ⌘⇧D (or whatever shortcut you set) a lot, even excessively.

That's how you seriously level up your productivity!
